One of the keys to maintaining young and healthy skin is to have adequate moisture. Our skin needs enough water content to serve the basic and very important function of keeping irritants out and moisture out. Skin that is sufficiently moisturized will be softer, more elastic and supple and yes, more resilient to damage and the external pollutants.

Simply put, the moisture level in the skin affects the overall health of your skin. Next, it’s important to understand this basic concept:

Oil and water are two different things.  Yes, basically we’re trying to say sebum or oil control and hydration are not mutually exclusive.

Oily skin too needs water, needs moisture, and hence needs a suitable moisturizer. A well hydrated skin tends to renew itself more rapidly and can absorb skincare products better too.


Many of us living in this part of the world are ‘genetically blessed’ with oily skin, but don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t need a moisturizer. You do, you just need to find one that’s suitable for your skin type and for your skin condtion.

Remember this, moisturizing the skin is an important part of a daily skincare routine. For oily skin, we need a moisturizer that helps balance sebum production while lightly hydrating the skin.

A good moisturizer suitable for oily skin has ingredients that dissolve the skin’s surface oils without over-drying the face. Some quick rules of thumb for choosing a suitable moisturizer for oily skin would be to look for something lightweight, non-greasy and yes, should not contain oil.

A moisturizer for oily skin should play two roles: regulate sebum production and hydrate to the skin.

In the market, you will notice that most moisturizers intended for oily skin are labeled ‘oil-free‘ or ‘for oily skin‘. These moisturizers are often also intended for people with acne, and many contain salicylic acid. This ingredient can clear enlarged pores to prevent breakouts.

Moisturizers for oily skin may also contain some form of natural astringent, such as lemon, chamomile, or papaya. Alcohol is also an astringent, but be careful not to choose a moisturizer with excessive amount of alcohol as it may over-dry your skin.

And oh, one very important point to note if you’ve oily skin is this:

Oily skin that is dehydrated will only secrete more sebum!

If your skin is dry, your sebaceous glands will start working overtime and will produce even more oil to compensate for it. So yes, be sure that you keep your skin moisturized even if you’ve oily skin.

There are two things you can do to maintain your skin’s hydration levels by drinking plenty of water and applying an oil-free moisturizer after cleansing.

Exfoliation is also something that will benefit oily skin more than other skin types. Gentle exfoliation will help get rid of dulling skin cells which can lead to breakouts. This will also prepare your skin to better receive the nutrients and benefits of your skincare products. But everything in moderation please, so don’t over-scrub and be gentle with your skin.
